Dr. Riopelle has a long history of treating patients for orthopedic and sports medicine injuries. The doctor has assisted in hundreds of orthopedic knee and hip surgeries. He is a member of the American Society of Anti-Aging Medicine and a member of the Amertican Society of Cosmetic Surgery. He trained with Dr. Joseph Perito, the physician who first brought the stem cell joint procedure to the US and who performed the procedure on New York Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon. Dr. Riopelle was one of the first physicians in the US to perform stem cell joint rejuvenation procedures.
Donna Riopelle was born in Southern California and grew up in Huntington Beach. She attended Mater Dei High School where she was Valedictorian of her class in 1976. She continued her education at Cal State University, Long Beach, obtaining a Bachelor’s in Nursing with Honor’s in 1984. Donna continued her education at UCLA earning a Master of Science in Nursing and Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in 1987. She has worked with multiple physicians and specialties over her twenty-five years’ of clinical experience. More recently in 2013, she completed a Master of Science in Regenerative and Nutritional Medicine from the University of South Florida Medical School, obtaining Board Certification in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. Most recent to broaden her knowledge, Donna is pursuing a doctorate program at Samuel Merritt University, CA, with sights to graduate in 2017.
Long distance cycling champion Seanna Hogan holds the world record for the transcontinental bicycle race set in 1999 and has won the race 6 times. However in 2003 she sustained a tibial plateau fracture which subsequently left her with chronic knee pain and bone on bone cartilage changes in her right knee.
On September 2014, Seanna Hogan underwent a procedure performed by Dr. Jeffrey Riopelle in which cells were taken by liposuctioning fat from her abdomen under local anesthesia. Regenerative cells were removed from the fat and these cells were then mixed with platelet rich plasma from her blood and injected into her knee.
”It was to the point that I ached all the time and was painful while riding my bike especially after long rides. I could no longer compete in such long distances.”Seanna Hogan
“I had a lifetime goal of setting the transcontinental world record for 50+” says Hogan. “It was painstaking and emotional to give up on that goal.” Because of the regenerative cell procedure that Dr. Riopelle performed, I am now registered and I’m going to race in June. In a short period of time I went from being totally devastated to having my dreams fulfilled again. Now after long rides I don’t have the ache anymore. It’s pretty much a miracle.”
“I started feeling improvement within 4 to 6 weeks. I noticed a difference in my gait. I wasn’t prone to limping. I had this idea I was going to be limping the rest of my life and after 4 to 6 weeks I could extend my leg far enough that the limp wasn’t there anymore. It’s now been 6 months and the change has been just remarkable. I can ride my bicycle without pain; I can sit without pain and cross my legs. The range of motion is quite a bit more than I had before and the pain is reduced dramatically. I bike about 300 to 400 miles per week now and so far so good.”
“Everyone I talk to who has joint issues, I say ‘you have to talk to Dr Riopelle’- this technology is incredible.”
Experience the reparative properties of stem cell joint rejuvenation at Riopelle Sports Medicine.
What is most exciting and new is our use of your own cells in the form of regenerative cells, taken from your own fat, to help rejuvenate joints. Regenerative cells from fat are what are called multi-potent, meaning they can convert into different types of body tissues. The role of regenerative cells is to repair and maintain the tissue in which they are found. Skin for example contains regenerative cells but they are normally few in number. Fat, on the other hand, contains millions of regenerative cells per ml, and when placed into joints they actually recognize the tissue they are in and they are capable of this same ability to repair and maintain. Thus, they can reduce structural defects, promote repair, and rejuvenate the joint. In short they promote a healthier better functioning joint. In a study from South Korea, patients underwent arthroscopic surgery before and 6 months after adipose derived regenerative cell treatment to the knees. Most of the patients showed significant new cartilage growth in the knee at the 6 month point following the procedure.
Why do we use fat to derive the regenerative cells? Both fat and bone marrow have significant numbers of these regenerative cells. They actually migrate back and forth between the fat and bone marrow and have been shown to be the same cells. Both fat and bone marrow act as storage reservoirs for them. Fat is particularly easy to remove under local anesthesia using a syringe and a small cannula through a tiny punch incision. We can easily and almost painlessly take as much fat as we need to get the regenerative cells. And who doesn’t have at least a little fat they would like to donate to help rejuvenate their joints.
Regenerative cells are available through only a small number of physicians in the US (about 200). Dr Riopelle is on the cutting edge of this therapeutic treatment through his work with the Ageless Regenerative institute in Palm Beach Florida and the American Society of Antiaging and Regenerative Medicine. How does this affect you as a sports medicine patient of ours? You have asked us to help you maintain your youthfulness and vigor and we are best equipped to help you with these both internally and externally.
The process goes as follows: You arrive at our office on the day of the procedure and we map out the area of fat you would like to have removed. We then move to our minor surgical suite and prep and drape the area. We apply tumescent anesthesia through a cannula after a small punch incision mad in your anesthetized skin. We allow about 45 minutes for the skin and fat to numb. We then remove the desired quantity of fat for the number of joints we are treating. We take the fat into the lab and put it through a process to separate out the regenerative cells. We remove and discard the fat and we are left with a small pellet packed with regenerative cells. We then draw blood and spin down and separate out the platelets and growth factors in the blood. We combine this Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) mix with the regenerative cells and inject this combination into the appropriate area of the affected joint. Results do vary.
Of importance to understand is that the regenerative cell protocols that we offer are not approved in the US as treatments, therapies drugs, or new drugs. They are considered investigational, and we have been part of an investigational study on them. Very few adult randomized controlled studies of regenerative cells have been performed to date. Therefore no guarantee of safety or effectiveness is made or implied.

Is there anyone who doesn’t either have knee or shoulder pain themselves or know a friend or relative who does? There are so many people benefiting from this newest form of joint rejuvenation. Just as stem cells from fat have reparative properties in skin, they have been shown to have reparative properties in joints. We have now done many cases of joint rejuvenation with truly exciting results. 6 months ago we introduced our stem cell joint transfer to a patient's knee, rotator cuff areas and shoulder capsul. At 2 weeks his pain was down to a 4 of 10. At 2 months, it was a 2 of 10. We saw him recently and his pain is usually gone, varying from a 0 to at most a 2 of 10. He said he recently saw his orthopedist locally and he who was quite impressed with the results.
In a recent peer reviewed study of “Clinical results and second-look arthroscopic findings after treatment with adipose-derived stem cells for knee osteoarthritis” published in the Journal of Knee Surgery, Sports , Traumatology and Arthroscopy the clinical outcomes and second-look arthroscopic findings of intra-articular injection of stem cells with arthroscopic lavage for treatment of elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) were evaluated. Stem cell injections combined with arthroscopic lavage were administered to 30 elderly patients (≥65 years) with knee OA. Almost all patients showed significant improvement in all clinical outcomes at the final follow-up examination. All clinical results significantly improved at 2-year follow-up compared to 12-month follow-up.
